Reblog5 hours ago with 412 notesRecently, SFF author Tansy Rayner Roberts wrote an excellent post debunking the idea that women did nothing interesting or useful throughout history, and that trying to write fictional stories based on this premise of feminine insignificance is therefore both inaccurate and offensive. To quote:
“History is not a long series of centuries in which men did all the interesting/important things and women stayed home and twiddled their thumbs in between pushing out babies, making soup and dying in childbirth.
History is actually a long series of centuries of men writing down what they thought was important and interesting, and FORGETTING TO WRITE ABOUT WOMEN. It’s also a long series of centuries of women’s work and women’s writing being actively denigrated by men. Writings were destroyed, contributions were downplayed, and women were actively oppressed against, absolutely.
But the forgetting part is vitally important. Most historians and other writers of what we now consider “primary sources” simply didn’t think about women and their contribution to society. They took it for granted, except when that contribution or its lack directly affected men.
This does not in any way mean that the female contribution to society was in fact less interesting or important, or complicated, simply that history—the process of writing down and preserving of the facts, not the facts/events themselves—was looking the other way.”
The relevance of this statement to the creation of SFF stories cannot be understated. Time and again, we see fans and creators alike defending the primacy of homogeneous – which is to say, overwhelmingly white, straight and male – stories on the grounds that anything else would be intrinsically unrealistic.

Here is the thing, okay? Coming into a feminist conversation with, “Have you considered that sometimes women acquire free drinks at bars?” is like walking into graduate school during Philosophy finals and saying, “Have you considered that the color blue that I see may not be the color blue that you see?”
Imagine you are the guy who just walked into that Philosophy class and laid that shit down. Imagine the class full of students who have worked very hard and committed themselves and sacrificed to be here, students who have spent several years of their lives learning about this subject. Imagine now their feelings when you go to the head of the classroom with a smirk on your face and demand the professor give you an A for effort. Imagine now that they think you are a douchebag asshole, because they do, and because you are. You are a douchebag asshole because you are obviously so self-centered, arrogant, and completely ignorant of the world around you, that you thought you could walk into a high-level course with no background and no work and say something profoundly simplistic and totally unrelated and also everybody should congratulate you for having done this thing, so brave, so provocative.
[….]
You are not asking us a real question. You are simply illustrating, for all to see, your own ignorance. You are saying, “I have not considered the implications of the question I have just asked. I have not taken the time nor effort nor commitment to sit down and ask myself this question. Instead, I have come into your philosophy classroom/office/feminist blog and shat out my question with a smirk, because I believe that my two seconds of thought are worth more than your long-term analysis, because I believe I am worth more.”

And for the record: women getting free drinks at bars enables rape culture.

Toku fans who complain that het pairings are ‘neglected’ and ‘ignored’ in fandom.
You know, for all I joke about the gay ships in Toku, they do het romance really well o_o Like seriously. I don’t think I’ve hetshipped this much since…. ever xD Like the only gay toku ship I’ve ever hardcore shipped (not including ot3s) is probably Shoutarou/Phillip. For everyone else, there’s an OT3/hetship I like better. Which is. Really surprising actually.

Okay here’s the thing: maybe people of color were looked over, but THE ROLE WAS NOT INTENDED FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR
Holy shit he’s supposed to be a superhuman from India. He full name is literally Khan Noonien Singh. Are you a total fuckhead and should I expect you on my page every fucking day?
I’VE HEARD ASIAN AND NOW INDIAN WHO IS RIGHT
Also I’m only “stalking” you so your sexist, racist, bigoted mouth doesn’t slander my nameIndian people are South Asian, fuckwit. And I don’t know, maybe a fucking search engine.
Someone get this fool an education.
LAST I CHECK INDIA WAS NOT A PART OF ASIA DIMWIT

FORGETTING THE FACT THAT ABRAMS FRANCHISE IS SET IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE TO THE ORIGINAL SERIES
I bet you didn’t know that the role was actually originally intended for Khan to actually be Nordic, so I think you will find that Benedict’s look is pretty much spot on for the role.
okay but did he fucking end up nordic no he was INDIAN
and that alternate universe theory is horse shit because then why is HIS race the only one that’s changed and no one else’s
enough you cumbertwats are horrible
India was once owned by Great Britain, remember. While most people think of the stereotypical Indian look or sound when they think of people from India, it is not uncommon to find people that look and sound completely British with Indian sounding names. Just because Benedict Cumberbatch is not what you expected, doesn’t mean that he isn’t right for the role.
Now, I haven’t seen the new Star Trek movie yet, so I can’t say how good he was or wasn’t in it, but don’t say he didn’t belong in the role because of the way he looks. It’s just as bad as saying someone didn’t get the role because they weren’t white. He is a fine actor, and probably got the role because he was the best for it. Or because he is extremely popular and they wanted to get fans of him to go see the movie.
Translation:
Khan’s character is one of the .001% blonde-haired, blue-eyed European descendants of the Indian population.
